Joao Madail Scorpius Pipes Rhodesian Horn Handmade Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description
Joao Madail, who also operates under the Scorpius Pipes moniker, is an artisan pipe-maker based in Portugal. Madail began pipe-making in 2010, under the guidance of another Joao – the renowned Brazilian pipe-maker Joao Reis.
The horn shape is a thoroughly modern one, and as with most things modern in pipe-making, owes its birth to post-war Danish artisans, such as the legendary Sixten Ivarsson and Bo Nordh. This horn, however, is not one in the vein of either Ivarsson’s or Nordh’s “Olifant” designs, even if it does resemble their basic curvature. I would say that this horn-Rhodesian hybrid is far less “Danish” than it is “German” or, at least, is evocative of the pipes of one particular German – the late, great Rainer Barbi. The angle, bowl composition, and accent together are strongly reminiscent of a number of pipes Barbi made in the 1990s. I’d love to pick Madail’s brain over this, as if I’m right, the pipe is a beautiful and very worthy homage.
This Madail is also completely unsmoked.
