Description
Born and raised in the small town of Gueydan, Louisana, Jay Mouton is an American artisan who works under the moniker of J. Mouton. Having crafted duck calls since he was a teenager, Mouton’s first forays into pipe-making began with carving tampers. Mouton’s unexpected successes with these handmade tampers allowed him to purchase the equipment necessary to create the pipes themselves. Studying the works of renowned American artisans such as J. Alan, Grant Batson, and Jared Coles, Mouton gradually developed his own pipe-making craft, which was furthered by his exchanges with Greek artisan Chris Asteriou.
One of the supreme advantages of hand-shaping pipes against a sanding wheel—as opposed to relying primarily on a lathe—is being able to render extraordinarily full-figured designs. Such designs could be wholly novel, or they could be renditions of otherwise traditional shapes that were, well, more shapely. This pipe, from J. Mouton, doesn’t beat around the bush. Christened “Fat Apple” by the artisan himself, it is indeed a distinctly wide and round execution of the classic staple, which also has the effect of further emphasizing its deep, ring grain sandblast. As is frequently the case for J. Mouton’s works, this pipe features a shank accent fashioned from fossilized whale spine, and as is always the case with J. Mouton, the pipe’s stem is hand cut ebonite.
