Description
Born and raised in the small town of Gueydan, Louisana, Jay Mouton is an American artisan who works under the moniker of J. Mouton. Having crafted duck calls since he was a teenager, Mouton’s first forays into pipe-making began with carving tampers. Mouton’s unexpected successes with these handmade tampers allowed him to purchase the equipment necessary to create the pipes themselves. Studying the works of renowned American artisans such as J. Alan, Grant Batson, and Jared Coles, Mouton gradually developed his own pipe-making craft, which was furthered by his exchanges with Greek artisan Chris Asteriou.
While many American artisans look to the Danes for inspiration, Italian pipes have also had a profound effect on the US handmades scene, such as through the work of Michael Butera and his students Michael Frey and Steve Weiner. One of the most recognizable ways this inspiration has taken hold is through the use of rusticated finishes. After all, it is perhaps the Italians more than anyone else who have shown that rustication does not stand in the way of a pipe being a true high-grade. This Liverpool, from American J. Mouton, is certainly that, with a sharp, granular, texture and a subtle contrast stain of black and reddish-brown. There are whispers of Paolo Becker and Castello in the design, with Mouton’s Danish-inflected sense of proportion ensuring that the pipe remains something distinct from each and wholly his own.
