HS Studio XL Sandblasted Horn Sitter Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.
The horn is a shape born out of Scandinavian pipe making, such as in the designs of Sixten Ivarsson and Bo Nordh. This pipe, from HS Studio, is also a horn of sorts, made using the same artisanal techniques—but, as the saying goes, this is not your daddy’s horn. Less Scandinavian than perhaps Japanese, it is highly reminiscent of the style of such greats as Takeo Arita or Ichi Kitahara, with its sides folding in on themselves at every corner. It is certainly impressive and, what’s more, even manages to squeeze a good deal of ring grain into its highly unorthodox form.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
