HS Studio Signature Smooth Bamboo Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.

I continue to be quite baffled by these HS Studio pipes. Not because they’re bad—quite the contrary, because (at least the ones we’ve had come in) they’re really good. This one is a gorgeous, long and slender straight grain Dublin. Like many of HS Studio’s pipes, there’s a Danish influence clear in this one, though its extensive use of bamboo (black bamboo, by the looks of it) appears to resonate more with the Danish-inspired Japanese greats, like Tokutomi or Satou. On a last note, this HS Studio appears to be one of their “Signature” grade higher-end pieces, as evinced by the extra stamping.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
