HS Studio Signature Smooth Acorn w/ Bamboo Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.

The acorn shape and the use of bamboo for shank extensions were not inventions of post-war Scandinavian pipe-making, but it is through post-war Scandinavian pipe-making that the two became such an iconic duet. Owing to Sixten Ivarsson, later Danish masters, and subsequently to artisans all over the globe, bamboo acorn shapes have reached the status of a modern classic. This particular rendition, from HS Studio, follows that same path, and does it very nicely, with good lines and shaping and plenty of flame grain on the acorn bowl itself. Unlike most HS Studio pipes, this would look to be a signature grade piece, based on the stamping, which isn’t present on other pipes from the workshop. I’m not entirely sure what though means, though, as our HS Studio pipes came as new old stock (NOS) from a local tobacconist after it had closed down.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, and comes with its original sleeve.
