While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.
The cobra is a quintessentially Danish shape, one made possible by innovations in pipe-making in post-war Denmark. But as with so many Danish shapes, it has become truly international with the rise of a worldwide artisan scene. This one, from China’s HS Studio, is pretty masterfully cut, giving the exact, “striking position” figure it is known for.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
