HS Studio Sandblasted Cherrywood w/ Boxwood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.
This is the largest HS Studio we’ve had from a NOS (new old stock) batch we picked up a while back, but I think I know why. HS Studio is well known for its “homages” to prominent artisans, and aside from the more generic shapes, its usually one or two particular makers being studied. This one looks to be greatly inspired by Kent Rasmussen, who is not only no stranger to the cherrywood shape, but has a very distinctive way of incorporating long, flowing shanks, conical, Dublin style bowls, and exotic wood mounts into his (often large) designs. I’ve not seen a Kent identical to this one, but the spirit is certainly there. But, such is art…
