HS Studio Rusticated Calabash Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.
The calabash has seen a fascinating revival in the last couple of decades, and from artisan pipe-makers no less. From Tom Eltang to J. Alan, pipe-makers are putting their own spin on a shape older than the briar pipe itself. This calabash from the Huge Stone division of the HS Studio workshop follows in that vein, with a briar bowl, a removable briar chamber, capped with what looks like Elforyn (AKA ivorite, or synthetic ivory), and a hand cut ebonite stem. Oddly enough, this calabash also features a reverse calabash chamber in its shank, making it a “double calabash” of sorts.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve.
