GBD Virgin 133, Straight Grain Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates [SOLD OUT]

Out of stock

Description

GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought and moved to London at the beginning of the 20th century, were it continued to produce high-quality and highly desirable pipes.

I had a really hard time parting with this one. I’ve mentioned before, if you keep up with these listings, about what’s sometimes called ‘angel hair’ grain. In other words, straight grain that is so fine and so densely packed that the briar resembles the flowing locks of a heavenly creature. It’s something artisan pipe-makers chase, and is very rare to see in factory-made ones due to manufacturing constraints. But, somehow, this GBD ended up looking like something an artisan would charge hundreds of dollars for. Hands down, one of the most beautiful billiards I’ve seen in a good while.

Anyway, the condition is good too. There’s some inner rim darkening at the top of the chamber, and some tooth scratches right by the button, but I’d consider these minor inconveniences at most. Besides, how else would we recognize beauty if not for the imperfections that allow it to truly shine?
