GBD Collector Prestige A, Smooth Lumberman Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought and moved to London at the beginning of the 20th century, were it continued to produce high-quality and highly desirable pipes.
This particular GBD has a few good things going for it. For one, the brass rondelle fitted into the perspex stem signals that it predates the Cadogan merger in 1981. It is a ‘Collector’, meaning that it was one of GBD’s over-sized offerings. Finally, it is a ‘Prestige’, meaning it was one of GBD’s higher-grade pipes. It is a large, beautiful pipe, worthy of its grading, with a light, blonde stain intended to make the most of the briar underneath. It is also remarkably light in weight, which is a testament to being made of very good briar. Finally, the condition is excellent. As a fan of Canadians and Lumbermans, I was very tempted to keep this one. The more I write about it, the harder it is to think about letting it go…
