G Pipes Smooth Bent Egg with Horn, Handmade Briar Pipe, New

While artisan pipe-making has historically been associated with North America, Europe, and Japan, talented carvers from more and more countries are being brought to the fore thanks to social media. One of these countries is Indonesia, and one of these carvers is Mohammad Anggi, the make of G Pipes.

I’ve categorized this pipe from Indonesian carver Anggi as a bent egg, as it did remind me quite a bit of the Brazilia shape 02 that Stanwell once made. Like Stanwell’s 02, it features an egg-like side profile with a smooth upward bend, and like the Brazilia iteration it features a long, genuine horn ferrule, stabilized by a brass ring mount for its mortise. Unlike the 02, however, this one’s bowl is distinctly wide across its horizontal axis, in a way that recalls the Danish “potato sack” pipes carved by figures such as Sixten Ivarsson and Jorgen Larsen. But, it isn’t quite a potato sack either. Instead, it is more like the “lens” shape that later artisans began to develop. It is very well done, too, with the briar having been carved so that the bowl’s narrower port and starboard sides show off cross grain that transforms into striking bird’s-eye patterns as it crosses into its wider bow and stern. A last touch, reminiscent of certain Japanese pipe aesthetics, comes in the form of a kiss of plateau on the bowl’s forward face.
