Erik Nording Handmade Rusticated Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked [SOLD OUT]

Description

Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.

This is a curious Nørding pipe for a number of reasons. For one, it is exceptionally traditional for a Danish pipe, especially considering Erik Nørding‘s historic role in the emergence of the modern Danish ‘style.’ If I didn’t know the make, I might presume the pipe had been created by an Englishman such as Les Wood, or an Italian, such as Paolo Becker, or Carlo Scotti’s Castello pipes. Another distinction held by this Nørding is that, as the nomenclature states, it was carved by Erik Nørding himself, rather than someone in his workshop, who make the majority of Nørding pipes today. Additionally, it has a silver plate on the top of the shank, but the plate is blank. It is possible that the pipe was intended to be part of a commemorative series of some kind and ended up as surplus, or it could simply be there for its owner to inscribe their name, or something of the like. I haven’t seen a Nørding series in this style before – and I like to think I know Nørding pipes pretty well – so i’m inclined towards the latter. I imagine a silversmith or keysmith (or similar) could do that quite easily. 

The last curious thing about this pipe is that it is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It appears to be quite an old pipe, given that it is not part of the contemporary Hand Made series which Erik Nørding makes himself, so it is remarkable that no one has smoked it yet.
