Description
I’ve had my eye on Brazilian artisan Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano for a while now, and I’ve certainly enjoyed what I’ve seen. From his humble beginnings as an autodidact, to the fruits of his spent time studying under major talents such as Luis Lavoz and Italy’s Angelo Fassi, Emiliano has proved himself to be one of the most adept pipe-makers of his generation.
This particular pipe from Emiliano is one of his signature shapes, having come to be known as the “Elf.” It is a supremely lightweight and elegant design, though one that ultimately escapes categorization by way of the traditional Anglo-French standards. I’ve heard it compared to the pickaxe shape, though to my mind it appears to be influenced by, on the one hand, Emiliano’s fellow Brazilian artisan Gustavo “marTelo” Cunha and his “Jatoba” shapes, and the 1960s “Reformed” shapes of the historic Pibe Dan (or Pipe Dan) workshop. Though there were a number of Dan Shape Reformed models, what they had in common was that “leaning” figure that allowed the bowl to remain upright when being smoked. As for the Jatoba, it had its own affinities with the Reformed models, though the bowl itself, being inspired by a fruit, was more bulbous and organic in its physique. Emiliano’s Elf follows a similar path regarding shaping, though is more svelte in its execution. It is undoubtedly a beautiful pipe, made all the better by its subtle correspondence with the history of pipe design thus far.
