Elwood by Les Wood Silver Cap Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Description
I imagine those who are familiar with the greats of English pipe-making will instantly recognize this one’s maker. But, for those requiring some extra confirmation, this pipe was made by Les Wood and Dolly Wood, otherwise known as L&JS Briars, or, simply, Ferndown. Elwood of London was the name adopted by Les & Dolly when making pipes for the German export market via Dan Pipe. When I asked Les why this was the case, he said that there were problems with using the Ferndown name in Germany, as it was assumed German speakers would not be able to pronounce “Ferndown.” “Elwood” was the workaround taken. As Les & Dolly officially retired in 2018, both Ferndown and Elwood pipes ceased being made long ago.
This particular Elwood would, to my eye, be the equivalent to a Ferndown “Bark,” of either a one or two star size grade. It does however feature something not common on either Elwood or Ferndown pipes, that being a sterling silver cap typically reserved for Les & Dolly’s higher grade pieces. This cap pairs nicely with the sterling silver collar Les also turned for the pipe, though the pipe still remains comfortably lightweight, at just 40 grams. Veteran smokers may find it comfortable enough to clench, and even if you don’t I’ve found that Les & Dolly’s style of rustication has a tactility to it that’s particularly enjoyable in the hand.
The condition is great. The stamping is a little faded and there’s some minor tooth chatter.
