Ed Burak Connoisseur Smooth Panel Oom Paul Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates
Out of stock
Description
Known as the “dean of American pipe designers” Ed Burak was not a pipe-maker per se. Rather, Burak was someone who worked with the master carvers of his time to bring his distinct ideas of what a pipe could be to life. As the owner of the Connoisseur Pipe Shop, Burak designed freehand pipes so singularly representative of pipe-making as an artistic endeavor, that many of the resulting works ended up in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
This particular Connoisseur looks to be Burak’s interpretation of the Anglo-French Oom Paul, or Hungarian, shape, and though it is more traditionally inclined than many of his designs, it nonetheless bears a number of his hallmarks. One is Burak’s attraction to especially angular shapes—shapes with drastic curvatures requiring sophisticated, precise engineering on the part of the carver; another is his inventiveness when it came to his classical renditions, something most clearly seen in this one’s distinctive use of panels.
The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and some residual oxidation on the pipe’s vulcanite stem.
