Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
Dunhill was one of the pioneers of sandblasting, securing the first patent for sandblasted pipe finishing in 1918. Over the decades since, the exact techniques used by Dunhill for their “Shell” finishes have been revised and refined, but the result is much the same: a crisp and richly textured bowl, expressing in relief the briar’s natural grain patterns. While Dunhill collectors have various opinions about which years of Dunhill manufacture produced the best pipes, the quality of the sandblasting on recent Shell Briars—such as this one, from 2014—is, in my opinion, as good as it has ever been.
This Dunhill is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original box and sleeve. This pipe came to us via our trade-in program. If you have pipes you’d like to sell or consign, feel free to contact us.
