Dunhill 1992 Collector & Dead Root Cased 3 Pipe Set Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

As I always say in these scenarios, all Dunhills are special, but some Dunhills are more special than others. As used to be relatively common for high-grade pipe manufacturers, Dunhill has, since its earliest years, produced small quantities of premium pipes in presentation cases, from two-piece traveling companions, to seven day sets to match one’s weekly rotation, to assortments of various shapes all cut from the same root cluster. As the decades went on, these special edition offerings continued, with the bar being raised periodically to include pipes that were even more extraordinary, extravagant, and luxurious than ever before. This is plainly evident from the 1992, three-piece edition seen here. Two pipes belong to the Collector line, a series of hand-turned Dunhills whose manufacture closely follows the grain of the briar used to fully capture its natural beauty. A third belongs to Dunhill’s historic Dead Root series, one also oriented toward perfect straight grain, with the pipe in this set having attained a three star grade. Each pipe has also been fitted with an engine-turned sterling silver collar to further accent and accentuate its light, Root Briar finish and jet-black vulcanite stem (as a side note, the silver mounting for these pipes was performed by Les Wood, then of L&JS Silverware and Ferndown, as confirmed by Mr Wood himself). Finally, the three pipes—an apple, a Rhodesian, and a Dublin—have been carefully measured to allow a snug fit within a velvet-lined, custom-made hardwood chest.

All three pipes are completely unsmoked, with original bowl coatings.
