Description
Custom-Bilt pipes were originally created in the early 20th century by Tracy Mincer, an American pipe-maker. Later adopting the slogan, ‘As Individual as a Thumbprint,’ Custom-Bilts were each rusticated by hand, giving them their signature rugged look, and ensuring that no two Custom-Bilts were exactly alike. Today, these pipes are prized by collectors, pipe history enthusiasts, and those who generally appreciate a well-made smoking machine.
While Custom-Bilt pipes are known for being rough-hewn and rugged, this one takes that to another level. The sheer depth and unpredictability of this billiard has it almost looking like a horn shape, making for one of the most assertive designs this side of a Preben Holm. As it’s a Custom-Bilt, rather than a Custombilt, it will have been made between 1934 and 1946, after which the name changed to the latter.
The condition is fair. Rim darkening, some handling marks, and some light scuffs on the stem. Then again, pretty good for a pipe nearing 100 years old. These things were made to be robust, and were highly successful in achieving that.
