Comoy’s Heirloom Magnum Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Out of stock

Description

Comoy’s is a historic brand in pipe making, and possibly the most historic brand in the making of briar pipes. Though originally founded in 1825 by a French family from Saint Claude, France, production of Comoy’s pipes was soon moved to London, England, where it established itself as one of the quintessential English pipe companies.

I’ve spent a good few days doggedly hunting down any information I can find on Comoy’s Heirloom pipes, and even after that, it seems to call them “mysterious” would be an understatement. In total, I think I’ve seen only five examples in my lifetime, and only this one up close. Comoy’s collectors seem torn between claims that they were carved by Horry Jamieson, of both Barling’s Make and GBD renown, and other claims that the Heirloom series was intended to be a competitor with the Unique series which Jamieson carved for GBD. If any readers of this listing are able to chime in with further information, I’d be much obliged, as ever. Regardless of who made the pipe, it is without doubt a masterwork of freehand carving.

The condition is great. Some minor handling marks and one small nick just above the thumb hole, on the left side.
