Description
Clarence Mickles was a pipe-maker from Illinois, Chicago, and something of a legend within the North American pipe scene. Before making pipes, Mickles was an auto mechanic, which is one reason why he was affectionately known as the ‘Mechanic.’ The other reason is that he was a supremely gifted pipe repairman, in addition to being a respected carver of his own, hand made pipes. Mickles passed away in 2001, after a 30-year career as a pipe-maker, but the profound impact he had on the pipe community ensured that he has not been forgotten, especially by collectors.
This pipe is a little more freeform than I’m used to from the late Clarence Mickles, but it nonetheless maintains a simple elegance to the design. The bowl is tall and tulip-like, hence my calling it that, and the grain is nicely fiery, with its swirls only furthering its floral feel. On the other hand, it is also a nice, large pipe, with plateau at both ends and a more than generous chamber, so don’t let its softer aspects fool you into thinking it’s dainty or delicate.
The condition is great. Some darkening on the back rim, but it doesn’t appear to have been smoked much at all.
