Description
Chris Morgan is an American artisan pipe-maker based in California. Beginning his pipe-making career in 2006, Morgan has managed to carve a distinct niche for himself in the contemporary pipe scene – or, rather, many niches. Morgan creates high-grade pipes both as part of his Signature line and as part of his Workshop line, which is a collaborative effort between himself and Montana artisan Sean Reum. Morgan is also responsible for the Blackjack and Briar Cigar pipe series, the latter coming from a partnership with Italian artisan and briar cutter Mimmo Romeo. Finally, as the creator of the rough and rugged Bones series, Morgan has become even more of a cult figure in the pipe community than most other artisans of his stature.
I was quite surprised to see this lumberman-length bent apple from Chris Morgan land on my desk, but I soon realized the genius behind its composition. You can tell that Morgan knows how to craft a hand made pipe, because Morgan knows that when the briar speaks, you listen. In other words, he’s able to recognize the natural grain patterns of a block and to work with them to help them achieve their fullest potential. Notice, for example, how the vertical grain that rises up the pipe’s bowl carries on, perfectly parallel, up the sides of the shank. Similarly, notice how the swirling bird’s-eye on the bowl’s underside continues up the shank and dissipates just as the shank meets the stem. It wasn’t just Morgan that decided what this pipe would look like – rather, it was a conversation. On the other hand, it was Morgan that decided to complete the design with a hand-cut turquoise ebonite stem. For that unique but well chosen addition, he gets full credit.
