Description
Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.
For those that don’t know, Chacom has a long history of partnering with outside designers to produce their more unique lines of pipes, from Denmark’s Tom Eltang to France’s own Pierre Morel Jr. The Volute line, to which this pipe belongs, was Chacom’s first partnership with an outside designer, Claude Robin, in 1996. This Volute is a quite stunning ‘cobra’ design, appearing to have been inspired by the deadly snake as it rears its head to strike. It is one of Chacom’s hand made pieces, including the stem, and carver has also made very good use of the natural patterns of the briar used. Each side is covered in swirling bird’s-eye, with these sides connected by cross-grain across the bowl’s fore and aft.
This Volute is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from the Chapuis-Comoy workshop to help ease in its first smokes.
