Description

Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.

As is commonly the case in pipe making, Chacom’s Select series is comprised of high-grade pieces that are a cut above the company’s standard (and already high quality) output. Less common is that, the reason these pipes are called “Select” is because the briar used to craft them is personally selected by Antoine Grenard, Chacom’s Managing Director. Select grade pipes are, therefore, made from carefully chosen, exceptional briar. Then there are pipes that earn an even greater accolade, that of the Straight Grain grade, whose bowls end up exhibiting even more exceptional grain patterns. Oddly enough, Chacom uses the Straight Grain designation on both smooth and sandblasted pipes, not unlike Denmark’s W.O. Larsen workshop in the 1980s. In the Anglophone world, we’re more used to referring to this as ring grain, which this sterling silver army mount pot certainly has in spades.

This pipe is completely unsmoked. It comes with its original sleeve.
