Description
In 1974, after growing impatient waiting for a pipe he’d ordered, Claudio Cavicchi decided he would simply make his own pipe instead. The former farmer from Bologna, Italy, spent the next 15 years making pipes, until his work took off and received widespread acclaim. Cavicchi’s pipe-making exploits have only become more renowned in the decades since, while his pipe-smoking exploits have earned him 1st place in numerous slow-smoking competitions.
Like many pipe-makers, Claudio Cavicchi assigns grades to his higher-end pipes (as all Cavicchi pipes are high-end), represented by the number of circled “C” stamps on the piece. This grading starts at one “C” and proceeds all the way to five “C”s, after which there is only the incredibly rare “Perla” grade, along with the even rarer “Diamante.” This particular Cavicchi managed to attain all five “C”s, and it’s not difficult to see why. The shape is a very traditional, stout billiard, not unlike the Dunhill LB, or the French Maigret. The quality of the briar, on the other hand, is only comparable to something like a WO Larsen Straight Grain, or even a Pearl. In fact, I think we had a Larsen Pearl grade not entirely unlike this Cavicchi as far as shaping goes, and to be frank I can’t decide if the grain on this one or that one was better. It took a lot of work for the Italians to catch up with their Danish pipe-making counterparts, but by golly they certainly got there.
This Cavicchi is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box and sleeve, by way of a collector who sent it through our trade-in program. Feel free to contact us if you are also interested in trade-ins.
