Description
In 1974, after growing impatient waiting for a pipe he’d ordered, Claudio Cavicchi decided he would simply make his own pipe instead. The former farmer from Bologna, Italy, spent the next 15 years making pipes, until his work took off and received widespread acclaim. Cavicchi’s pipe-making exploits have only become more renowned in the decades since, while his pipe-smoking exploits have earned him 1st place in numerous slow-smoking competitions.
I once asked a late friend of mine, who had decades of experience working in the pipe industry, which pipes he thought were the “best” smokers. This was not an easy question to answer, and though he said his “favorite” were Ardor and Don Carlos, he nonetheless awarded the title of “best” to Cavicchi. As someone currently in the business of selling pipes, I couldn’t possibly comment, but I will note that they are great pipes. Cavicchi himself is also an incredibly versatile pipe-maker, with designs ranging from traditional Anglo-French shapes, to wild Danish-style creations, to modern Italian hybrids. This one seems to fall into the latter camp, bringing together the classic squat tomato shapes of early French briars, with the kinds of slight adjustments and re-configurations common in the first wave of post-war Danish design. It is dressed in Cavicchi’s take on Italian pebble-dash rustication, including a subtle black and red contrast stain.
The condition is very good. Some rim darkening, but nothing major.
