Castello Old Antiquari G Sandblasted Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description

Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’

While it may look like an author, a squat tomato or a diplomat shape, I think this is Castello’s shape 26, which the workshop itself refers to a bent apple, or pomo. In any case, it’s a highly distinctive design, especially when it takes on the proportions of Castello’s larger “G” size, as this one does. This one is dressed in Castello’s Old Antiquari sandblast, a relatively light, reserved approach to the finish that works very well with its typical Tanshell-like light brown stain. This pipe also has an extra exotic wood accent, which breaks up the transition between bowl and accent very nicely.

The condition is great. Some very minor rim darkening, but it’s evident that this pipe was well cared for.
