Castello Old Antiquari 33 4K Sandblasted Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’

Castello’s shape “33” Canadian is a decidedly short and stout take on the Anglo-French classic, with the result being something that both looks good and, as they say, smokes “like a freight train.” This KKKK size rendition is even more muscular than most 33s, with its thick bowl accentuating the ring grain sandblast of its Old Antiquari finish.

The condition is good. There’s some minor rim darkening a couple of spots of char that have brought the top of the chamber slightly out of round, but the chamber itself is perfectly sound.
