Castello “Castello” KKKK Smooth Bent Bulldog Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates [SOLD]
Out of stock
Description
Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’
Speaking of Dunhill, there is something of the old ‘PO’ shape about this Castello. Like the Dunhill PO, it is around a group 4 length (being just slightly longer), but it is also distinctly squat and wide, especially around its bowl. The pipe is an example of Castello’s “Castello” finish, and is graded four ‘K’s out of a possible four. As such, it has excellent grain, with a beautiful mix of flame grain and bird’s-eye patterns.
The condition is great, having come to us through our consignment program. There is some darkening on the back rim, but the rest of the finish is unblemished, and the pipe’s stem is free from chatter. The previous owner was also careful enough to send it to us with its original box and sleeve.
