Description
Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’
Though its origins lie elsewhere, the “hawkbill” would become one of the defining figures in post-war Italian handmade pipes. And while it has become a common refrain in the workshops of Cantù, Pesaro, and Cucciago, each of Italy’s great pipe-makers interprets the shape differently. While Ser Jacopo’s hawkbills tend to be bold and bulbous, for example, Castello’s are lighter and more modest in proportions. This particular Castello hawkbill sits at the very top of its “Castello” grade bracket, having earned a full four out of four “K”s, showing off its flame grain and bird’s-eye grain patterns with a very Italian, natural blonde finish.
The condition is great. Lightly smoked.
