Castello 1950s Sea Rock 15A Rusticated Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description
Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’
The Sea Rock Briar may well be Castello’s most important—and popular—contribution to the world of pipes. Along with Savinelli’s Corallo, it inaugurated an enduring tradition of pebble-dash finishes in Italian pipes and beyond, and in doing so dispelled any doubt that rustication precluded a pipe from being high-grade. This pipe is just such an example, but it’s a little more than that. It is not only a Castello Sea Rock Briar, it is a Castello Sea Rock Briar from some of the earliest years of their production. The stamping features the trademark registration number that was common for early Castello pipes, but unlike other “reg era” Castellos, it does not feature any kind of size code. In the late 1950, Carlo Scotti began using a grading system that corresponded to the size and/or grain quality (depending on the finish) of Castello pipes, in the format (ascending) “SA, SB, SC,” etc. Around 1970, this format was switched to an uppercase “K” system; in 1982, this format was switched again to the current, lowercase “k” system. This, along with the more rugged, naturalistic style of the Sea Rock finish, would indicate that the pipe is an early 1950s model, making it a real collectors’ piece.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and a fairly typical degree of finish fading for a 70 year old pipe. As the Sea Rock is meant to evoke weathered stone, however, I would hesitate to call this even a “cosmetic” issue.
