Caminetto New Dear Moustache KS Bent Egg Estate Briar Pipe
Out of stock
Description
Caminetto was, and is to this day, a decisive figure in the history of Italy’s pipe workshop tradition. After spending time developing their skills in the Castello workshop, Sergio Ascorti and Luigi Radice left to found their own venture, which they named, ‘Caminetto.’ Here, Ascorti and Radice were able to create their own now-classic shapes and finishes, such as the rusticated ‘business,’ and the carved, wax-drip ‘new dear.’
Briar pipes haven’t always been prized for their grain patterns. Many of the earliest briar pipes were instead carved with figures, ornate patterns, or whatever else their makers could think of. Caminetto’s New Dear series is, I would say, closer to this tradition than more modern ones. It’s been hand-worked to resemble something other than the medium it belongs to, like the painter’s trompe-l’œil; instead of briar, the bowl resembles wax or weathered clay. It’s a remarkable achievement, and this particular New Dear was exceptional enough to attain Caminetto’s rare ‘Moustache’ grade. On a last note, judging by the thin ‘bird in flight’ Caminetto logo on the stem, this pipe should have been made between the end of the 1960s and the mid-1970s.
The condition is near-mint. The pipe has been smoked, but barely.
