Caminetto Business 82 Rusticated Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Out of stock

Description

Caminetto was, and is to this day, a decisive figure in the history of Italy’s pipe workshop tradition. After spending time developing their skills in the Castello workshop, Guiseppe Ascorti and Luigi Radice left to found their own venture, which they named, ‘Caminetto.’ Here, Ascorti and Radice were able to create their own now-classic shapes and finishes, such as the rusticated ‘Business,’ and the carved, wax-drip ‘New Dear.’

Speaking of which, here we have an example of a Caminetto in the Business finish itself. As can be seen from this bent egg, the Business was once not entirely unlike Castello’s Sea Rock, while at the same time being less granular, with Ascorti and Radice oping for an even more naturalistic and rugged approach. As I’ve mentioned before, this brought the Business closer to the very early, 1950s-60s Sea Rock finishes put out by the Castello workshop than later iterations, which makes a lot of sense given Caminetto’s lineage. Judging by the thin ‘bird in flight’ Caminetto logo on the stem, this pipe should have been made between the end of the 1960s and the mid-1970s, which again makes perfect sense. While contemporary Caminetto pipes are undoubtedly very beautiful, its move toward a more refined and elegant aesthetic over the decades has meant moving away from pipes like this one. For those of us who are quite partial to the Caminetto pipes of the first decades, this evolution has been bittersweet. Thank goodness for the estates market, huh?

The condition is very good. Some rim darkening and a couple of small tooth marks on the stem. The pipe comes with its original box and sleeve.
