Bruno Nuttens is a Belgian artisan living in France. Starting out as a pipe restorer, Nuttens originally began making his own pipes under the guidance of French master carver Pierre Morel Jr. Originally creating relatively traditional pipes – often using carefully selected, decades-seasoned stummels from France’s historic Saint-Claude makers – Bruno later began developing fully handmade pipes in more adventurous styles. Along the way, Nuttens spent time with Danish legend Tom Eltang in order to further develop his techniques. Today, he creates high-grade pipes in a variety of styles, including his signature ‘Bing’ and ‘Twiggy’ shapes.

I hate to be that guy, but I liked Bruno’s pipes before they were cool. Or, at least, I liked his work before it received such international renown in recent years. In fact, I have one of the original Brulor re-releases he sold when he was operating out of his eBay store. Anyway, bragging aside, this particular Nuttens is one of his acclaimed Bing-shaped pipes. Just as a good Bing should be, the pipe is long (around 7 inches) and lightweight (under 40 grams); it’s also dressed in a very elegant blonde stain, which highlights the most beautiful bird’s-eye grain patterns around its bowl. Speaking of grain quality, this particular Bing is an H3 grade, and actually pre-dates the current Bings Bruno makes, which are now graded from B1 to B4. Back when this one was made, H3 was the highest grade of Nuttens’ Heritage series (the shape was originally not separated from other Nuttens Heritage pipes), which are crafted from well seasoned stummels sourced from Bruno’s Saint-Claude connections.

Having come to us as part of our consignment program, this Nuttens is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve.
