Description
BriarWorks represents the dream of many a pipe maker, being a workshop owned and stewarded by artisans whose mission is to produce affordable pipes of their own design. Founded in 2013 in Tennessee by American pipe making legends Todd Johnson and Pete Prevost, BriarWorks has gone from strength to strength in the years since, not least because of its ability to combine cutting-edge factory production techniques with high-grade artisan standards. Not unlike Pibe-Dan or Stanwell in Denmark, many a high-flying carver has been a part of the BriarWorks team, including contemporary greats such as Sam Adebayo, Micah Redmond, and Bill Shalosky.
What happens when you put artisans in charge of something more akin to a pipe factory? You get something like this. The C81 is one of BriarWorks’ Classic line which, as the name suggests, is comprised of their versions of classic, Anglo-French shapes. In this instance, the shape is a traditional, compact, saddle apple, in a color scheme evoking the timeless black and white “dress” motif. While the pipe’s wire rustication may seem more modern, owing to recent uses by makes such as Stanwell, it is in fact also a very classic approach to finishing, with the most famous example likely being the mid-century GBD Rock Root.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
