Description
Alongside Julius Vesz, Phillip Trypis, and John Calich, Blatter is one of the pre-eminent names within the history of Canadian handmade pipes. But it is the Blatter name that has thus far endured for the longest time within that history. This is because the Blatter family have been in the business of making and selling pipes for over 120 years. In fact, last I checked, Blatter pipes were made by Patrick Blatter, who, as far as I’m aware, is the only example of a fifth-generation pipe-maker ever.
This particular Blatter, however, was made by Robert Blatter, Patrick’s father. Robert was a fourth-generation pipe-maker and likely one of the most famous of the Blatter artisans, beginning his career in 1968 alongside his brother Pierre. From what I can tell, this is a 1995 make, and is an extra large, hand-carved rendition of the classic, full-bent apple shape. The pipe’s stony rustication provides an excellent hand-feel in addition to its rugged aesthetic, and the chamber is fittingly wide and deep, promising hours of enjoyment at a time with the right blend.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and some general finish fading, but nothing major.
