Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. Over the decades, Stanwell has used many sub-brands to market their pipes, with one such sub-brand being the Bijou make.

When I say that Stanwell has used many sub-brands over the decades it’s been going, I do mean many sub-brands. Bijou, Danish Sovereign, Danske Club, Kingsway, Royal Danish, Scandia – the list goes on. I’m not sure why they used so many, but I do know one thing: Stanwell sub-brands are a great way to get your hands on rare Stanwell shapes, especially those that were only produced for a short period of time in the main-line catalog. I had to ask my friend, who knows all things Stanwell, what this one was, as it’s certainly not a shape Stanwell currently produces. He said it looked like a shape “95,” one of Stanwell’s stack billiards that was discontinued in the 1960s, with the number reassigned altogether by the 1960s. It’s a pity it was discontinued so soon, as it’s a great, lightweight pipe, with a tall, narrow chamber that should smoke flake cuts like a dream.

The condition is good. There’s a fair amount of rim darkening, though I’d imagine a lot of it would come off with some careful scrubbing.
