Description
Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.
Bari pipes can be a little mysterious sometimes. One source of mystery is the series name “Wiking.” Why? Because in the Bari catalogs, pipes just like this one are listed as part of the freehand “Viking” series. So, why the difference? I’m not entirely sure, but it’s likely you won’t need a Danish dictionary to know what “Wiking” means. Perhaps there was a trademark dispute, as often happens. In any case, this Bari is probably more remarkable in that it’s unsmoked. Given how long it’s been since Bari was making pipes, that’s quite an achievement. It’s also a great example of a mixed-finish freehand, combining panels of smooth finished flame grain with sandblasting that exposes the briar’s natural growth rings.
As stated, this pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
