Description

Bari was a Danish pipe-making company founded by Viggo Nielsen in the early 1950s. During the company’s lifetime. Viggo, his two sons Kai and Jørgen, and Åge Bogelund, and Helmer Thomsen all worked for Bari, producing high quality pipes in the Danish style. After Bari, each of these pipe makers would later continue to produce high-grade pipes under their own names.

This is an interesting pipe from Bari. In many ways, it’s quite a traditional bulldog, but upon closer inspection the typical bulldog design has been modified and reinterpreted, as was very common in Danish neoclassical approaches. The bowl is taller than on conventional bulldogs, and the shank is longer. The bowl almost recalls the Danish egg shape, but with beadlines, and the pipe’s general curvature is distinctly smooth and graceful – a little like the bulldogs made by Tao and Poul Ilsted. It’s also uncommonly large, being 6 inches in length, but it isn’t unwieldy. It sits quite nicely in the hand. It also has magnificent grain, which the wine red stain brings out nicely.

It’s in an excellent condition. A real Danish gem.
