Atin Smooth Lovat Handmade Briar Pipe, 9mm, Iran [SOLD OUT]

Description

Atin pipes are made by Bahareh, ‘Atin’ Khosroanjam, an artisan from Iran’s up and coming tobacco pipe scene. Having initially learned pipe-making from her husband, Keresaspa (whose pipes MBSD also offers), Atin pipes have developed their own style, though with the same precision engineering and attention to quality as her mentor’s. While Atin pipes, like Keresaspa’s, are heavily influenced by Danish pipe-making, Atin leans more towards the neoclassical approach initially pioneered by Sixten Ivarsson, especially those Ivarsson made for Stanwell in the 1950s and early 1960s. This is a period long neglected by pipe-makers (including Stanwell), but one that, through artisans like Atin, is experiencing a welcome comeback.

This is a very traditional pipe from Atin, though with a little something that makes it quite special. It is a classic lovat, with a striking mix of natural bird’s-eye and cross grain around the bowl. The stem is what makes this pipe truly unique, however. While it may look like the standard acrylic used on many pipes, it is actually vintage Galalith, otherwise known as Erinoid. Galalith was a synthetic material produced at the turn of the 20th century, somewhat like Bakelite. The appeal of Galalith, however, in addition to its heat resistant properties, was that, when polished, it took on a sheen comparable to gemstones or ivory. As can be seen, this particular vintage Galalith has a beryl red hue, which offers a striking complement to the stummel’s fiery brown stain.

This pipe has been drilled for 9mm filters, however it can also take a non-filter adapter, which MBSD can provide if the buyer asks for one.
