Astleys Smooth Cutty Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates
Out of stock
Description
Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes.
There is something about this Astleys that I could only adequately describe as “elegant.” Granted, Astleys pipes did tend to lean into a certain English class, but this one manages it even more so. It has a slender, supple quality to its design, with its narrow, pencil shank, extra length, and subtle bowl cant – like the traditional cutty, but more delicate and refined. As an additional bonus, it’s also wonderfully lightweight.
The condition is very good. Some darkening and finish fading on the rim, but nothing major.
