Description
Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes.
I do love a clencher, and this Astleys is about as clenchable as they come, aside from the odd nosewarmer. An eminently traditional billiard in every proportion, the pipe features a nice mixture of grain and a lovey, brown sugar stain. Being a mere 30 grams hasn’t stopped it from having a very reasonably sized chamber, either. What more could one want?
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and a few very slight scratches on the bowl exterior.
