Astleys Smooth Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates
Out of stock
Description
Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes.
There is something about this traditional apple shape that reminds me of how Les Wood used to turn his. In fact, I think we’ve sold an Astleys pipe of a very similar stature to this one, and the former was verified as one of Les’s own. It’s a lovely pipe either way—classically inclined, but with a bit more heft to it, as well as a very generous chamber size. It’ll be a good pipe for sitting and sipping over the course of an afternoon or an evening.
The condition is very good. Some minor wear to the rim and a couple of scratches on the bowl.
