Astleys of London Smooth Straight Pot Estate Briar Pipe
Out of stock
Description
Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes.
This beautiful pot from Astleys has James Upshall’s name all over it. From the walnut stain identical to James Upshall’s ‘P’ grade, to the obvious (and very skilled) hand-shaping of the stummel, I would be very surprised if this pipe wasn’t made by Barry Jones and Ken Barnes. As an added bonus, the pipe is a mere 34 grams, despite being 6 inches in length, making it an ideal clencher.
The condition is excellent. There’s some slight inner rim darkening, but nothing major. The pipe has been well preserved.
