Astleys of London Smooth Bent Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes.
Having just sold a Dunhill saddle Rhodesian from the late 20th century, this Astleys strikes me as being a Dunhill production of that same shape. Curiously, however, if it is indeed an Astleys made for the tobacconists by Dunhill, it would have to be a Russet, or perhaps even an Amber Root, as those are the only stains historically offered by Dunhill that match the golden brown hue of this pipe. As is often (but not always) the case, I cannot say for certain who made this pipe. But I can certainly say that it is beautiful.
The condition is similarly so. I don’t see any issues that need highlighting, but please consult the pictures for yourself before purchasing.
