Astleys of London Rusticated Oom Paul Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates [SOLD]
Out of stock
Description
Astleys was one of London’s most historic pipe and tobacco shops. Like many pipe tobacconists, its owners had pipes made specially to be sold under the shop’s name. Astleys pipes, however, were made by some of the premier pipe manufacturers and artisans in the UK, such as Dunhill, Charatan, Les Wood, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall. As a result, Astleys pipes are prized for their quality, and as examples of the very finest British pipes.
The Oom Paul might just be the ultimate ‘sittin’ and sippin’ pipe. This one is no exception; the bowl is tall and deep, promising long, relaxing smokes, and the shape is easy handle, whether hanging from the one’s jaw, or tucked away between one’s fingers. As this is a rusticated pipe, with a finish not unlike Ferndown’s ‘Bark,’ or the similar one used by Barry and Ken at James Upshall, I would have to think that it is hand-made by one of the two makes.
The condition is great. The finish is slightly faded, but not to a significant degree. The vulcanite stem is without tooth marks, and the Astleys nomenclature and logo are perfectly preserved.
