Description
Ascorti belongs to a historic lineage in Italian artisan pipe-making. Guiseppe ‘Peppino’ Ascorti was first employed as a pipe-maker in the 1950s, in Carlo Scotti’s Castello workshop in Cantu. There he met Luigi Radice, and in the 1960s the two decided to leave Castello to create their own pipe-making workshop, under the name ‘Caminetto.’ At the end of the 1970s, Guiseppe Ascorti and Luigi Radice left Caminetto and once more decided to start new ventures. Luigi Radice founded the Radice pipe workshop, and Guiseppe’s son Roberto Ascorti, who had also worked in the Caminetto workshop since he was a child, decided to create a workshop under his own name. Roberto was joined not only by his father, but also many of the talented craftsmen who had formerly worked for Caminetto. In 1980, the Ascorti workshop was born.
We had a few of these 40th Anniversary Ascorti pipes come in a while ago, after acquiring them from a local store closure. I thought we’d sold them all already, but it turns out there was at least one left. Personally, I’ve loved having them in, as the design is really nice. It’s a very Italian blend of the Dublin, sitter, panel, and maybe even a bit of the old cherrywood, tied together by a Lucite inlay displaying the years Ascorti had been in operation at the time. These marked 40 years of the Ascorti workshop, an impressive feat in this day and age. I wonder if they’ll do a 45th anniversary this year? In any case, these limited edition 40th models won’t be coming back any time soon, so I imagine this one will please our Italian high-grades collectors.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original (though flaking) bowl coating. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
