Antique Hawkbill Screw Top Block Meerschaum Pipe, Fitted Case
Out of stock
Description
While I cannot provide an exact date, this meerschaum has all the hallmarks of being a late 19th to turn of the 20th century piece: the design is incredibly old fashioned, with a calabash-style bowl that screws into the base of the pipe; a shape that we might today call a hawkbill, a Lyon, or a Captain Warren, but which seems to predate each of these; and a rounded button that was superseded long ago by the flatter, slotted buttons we are used to. It also wears a dark patina from years – probably decades – of use, which on a meerschaum is a badge of honor more than anything else. Make no mistake, this is a special pipe for those who appreciate that strange and charming mineral we know as ‘meerschaum.’
