Description

Andrey Kharitonov is, to my eye, one of the most innovative artisans in pipe-making today. Born in 1961 in the former Soviet Union, Kharitonov’s work has been inspired by a number of his compatriots in the artisan scene, such as Viktor Yashtylov, Misha Revyagin, and Alexey Kharmalov. Like the latter, Kharitonov frequently experiments with novel shapes, textures, and stains, creating pipes that are instantly recognizable as his making.

Something Andrey Kharitonov seems to have inherited from one his heroes, Victor Yashtylov, is an affinity for semi-figural designs inspired by the natural world. In particular, and again like Yashtylov, flowers and floral patterns are a common motif in Kharitonov’s work, such as in the case of this tulip. The “tulip” billiard is, of course, a shape that can be traced far back into the Scandinavian tradition, though it is arguably only Anne Julie whose renditions pursued the same degree of verisimilitude that the contemporary St Petersburg and Moscow schools do. Even then, Kharitonov has his own ways of representing nature, and of combining this naturalism with his signature, futurist design philosophy.
