Description

Andrey Kharitonov is, to my eye, one of the most innovative artisans in pipe-making today. Born in 1961 in the former Soviet Union, Kharitonov’s work has been inspired by a number of his compatriots in the artisan scene, such as Viktor Yashtylov, Misha Revyagin, and Alexey Kharmalov. Like the latter, Kharitonov frequently experiments with novel shapes, textures, and stains, creating pipes that are instantly recognizable as his making.

You have to hand it to Andrey, even when he makes a shape older than most modern pipe brands, he still manages to create something completely novel. This cherrywood, for example, retains the most elementary form of its Anglo-French source, yet departs radically from it through the use of unorthodox textures, color schemes, and accents. The bowl has been fluted in a way that—somewhat surprisingly—helps to accentuate the flame grain patterns underneath; the shank has been extended by way of a long, slender stretch of horn; and the stem has been hand cut from wintergreen swirl ebonite.
